How the challenge works

  1. One native film is a stampWatch any film on a country’s native-voice list and that country is added to your passport. Outside-view souvenirs can also make the first mark, but the visa route is native cinema.
  2. Three native films earn a visaA visa means you have started to hear the country in its own cinematic voice, not only through films made about it from elsewhere.
  3. The complete native list is citizenshipLists stop at ten and stay shorter when research has not produced enough verified films. Completing the published native route is enough. There is no secret eleventh title.
  4. The world is 196 published countriesThe atlas includes future departures still being researched. They appear on the map, but the challenge counts only countries with a published film guide.

Traveller ranks

Departed1 country

The first border crossing is the one that counts.

Explorer10 countries

The tour has a shape. Keep moving.

Traveller25 countries

Enough stamps that friends will ask to see the passport.

Globetrotter50 countries

Half the mythic “around the world” number, and still a wide world left.

Nomad100 countries

Home is the next screening.

Citizen of Everywhere196 countries

Every published country stamped. Wonderfully absurd, and possible.

Easy first stamps

Flagship countries with widely travelled native films. Stamp one you have already seen, then let the map pull you somewhere less familiar.

One film from every country

196 published guides · 2,353 ranked films. Each stop is the highest-ranked native starting point, or the strongest outside view when a native route is still being researched.

Questions people actually ask

How many countries are there?

This challenge uses the 196 published country guides on the atlas. That is a cinema map, not a political argument: a destination is here when there is a verified film to watch from or about it.

What counts as a film from a country?

A native film needs a verified creative relationship to the country — not merely a shooting location, a financier, or a database tag. Souvenir films are foreign-led works whose story remains meaningfully centered there. The public methodology is the rulebook. Read the methodology.

What about co-productions?

Financing alone never decides native identity. If a film’s predominant creative voice belongs to one country, it can enter that native list even when other countries helped pay for it. When the creative center is split or unclear, it stays off the native route.

What about Soviet, Yugoslav, or other historical cinemas?

Historical productions are placed by the cinematic culture they belonged to, then mapped onto today’s published destinations only when that relationship is still honest. Pre-collapse films are not automatically stamped onto every successor state. If a placement is disputed, the methodology page is the place to start, and corrections are welcome.

Where can I watch films from small countries?

Each film page links out to watch options. Festival restorations, national archives, and specialist streamers often carry titles that never appear on the largest services. The atlas will not pretend a film is easy to find when it is not.

Which country should I start with?

Start with a film you already love and stamp that country, or pick a short native title from an unvisited continent. The starter films below are the highest-ranked native entry points, grouped so the first hour of the challenge does not require a 196-row decision.
