1. The Somali Dervish
This sprawling historical epic dramatizes the early-20th-century Dervish movement and its leader Sayyid Mohammed Abdullah Hassan, who led two decades of resistance against colonial rule. One of the few feature films ever produced in the region.
Curator’s note: Said Salah Ahmed’s recovered epic is assigned to Somaliland through two film-level pillars: principal authorship rooted in the present-day Somaliland territory and a sustained Dervish history centered there; Somalia remains the raw 1985 production provenance.
